As a woman, hair loss can seem unexpected, unimaginable, and even devastating. You may feel embarrassed and unsure of how to address this sensitive subject. You are not alone. Many women have long avoided discussing their hair loss and, unfortunately, have also shied away from pursuing treatment. In the past 10 years, however, Dr. Yael Halaas has experienced a rapid increase in the number of women patients seeking treatment for thinning hair. Whether the hair loss is due to medical reasons, traction alopecia, or genetics, women are now acknowledging their hair loss and seeking solutions. Fortunately, there is a range of treatments available that can address this harrowing issue.

Basic Hair Care and Medicines

As the first line of treatment, you can take some simple steps to help prevent hair damage and loss. Washing your hair with a mild shampoo, avoiding pulling it back, and minimizing your hair’s exposure to heat and chemicals can help preserve fragile hair. Topical medications can also mitigate hair loss, particularly in younger individuals whose thinning is a recent issue.

Minoxidil

Depending on the nature of your hair loss, the topical solution minoxidil may stimulate hair growth and help reduce thinning. Available in an over-the-counter liquid, minoxidil should be applied to the scalp once or twice a day. Results are not immediate and it usually takes at least four months to see noticeable improvement. Some side effects of minoxidil include itchy scalp, flaking, and irritation. While some may benefit from minoxidil treatment, it is not a cure for baldness. When the product is discontinued, the positive results will cease.

Formula YH Pink

Formula YH is a unique solution specifically for women. Formula YH Pink combines Minoxidil and key ingredients such as Estradiol to slow down the hair loss and stimulate hair growth. Minoxidil is proven to increase the growth phase of hair and shorten the hair loss phase, meaning patients can grow longer hair without shedding. Formula YH should be applied two to three times a day. Results can be seen in six to eight weeks, with significant results in three to six months. Formula YH is available for men in Formula Green (with Minoxidil) and Blue (with Minoxidil and Finasteride).

Hair Transplants

For a permanent solution, Dr. Halaas performs hair transplants. There are two main hair restoration techniques, distinguished by how the hair is harvested and grafted to the balding areas:

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): In this method, Dr. Halaas will harvest healthy hair follicles directly from a donor site on the scalp. She will then place the follicles individually into the affected area. FUE utilizes advanced technology that can extract the healthy hair follicle and precisely place it into the slot of the damaged follicle. Because the hair follicles are removed one-by-one, the number of hair follicles that can be grafted during a single session is limited. However, harvesting individual follicles has its advantages: it reduces the chance of scarring of the donor site.

Follicular Unit Grafting (FUG): Also known as the strip method, the FUG technique is less labor and time intensive than the FUE technique. During a FUG procedure, Dr. Halaas will remove a strip of hair from a donor area (generally located at the back of the head) and graft it to the bald area. The graft survival and regrowth rate are generally higher when the FUG technique is used. On the downside, strip harvesting can produce a more noticeable scar than individual follicle extractions.

Both follicular unit grafting and follicular unit extraction are minimally-invasive procedures. Before the hair restoration procedure, Dr. Halaas will administer a sedative to ensure patient comfort. After a hair transplant procedure, it is common for patients to experience some minor discomfort or soreness in the scalp. Some patients report some numbness around the transplant site; however, this is usually a temporary side effect that disappears once the scalp has fully healed.

A significant advantage to a hair transplant is that the results are permanent. Hair transplants are not for everybody and results will vary from individual to individual, based on a variety of factors such as hair texture, age, and the extent of hair loss.
