FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION (FUE)
What is FUE?
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant technique that can treat baldness and restore hair. Dr. Yael Halaas, New York Board Certified plastic surgeon with 17 years of hair restoration experience, recommends hair transplants for those looking for a lasting solution to hair loss. Dr. Halaas uses Neograft, one of the most advanced technologies in hair restoration, which allows her and the technician to place hair follicles individually to replicate the natural contour of the hairline with less time between harvesting and placement, ensuring new successful growth.

Who is the ideal candidate for FUE?
The ideal candidate has bald areas and donor site with enough healthy hair extract. A hair transplant can ameliorate the aesthetic effects of hair loss, but patients should be realistic about outcomes. A FUG may be more appropriate for those looking to achieve hair density faster with a single procedure.
What is the difference between FUE and FUG hair transplant procedures?
The two main hair restoration methods–Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Grafting (FUG)–are effective techniques and both can produce excellent results. Dr. Halaas has expertise in the two techniques and performs them regularly at her NYC practice. The major difference between the two is how the healthy follicles are extracted and transferred to the bald area.
|Transplant Method Comparison||Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)||Follicular Unit Grafting (FUG)|
|Harvesting method||Follicular units are extracted individually||Strip of tissue is removed and then cut into individual follicular units|
|Procedure time||Time intensive process that may require multiple appointments||More time efficient than FUE|
|Graft survival||Approximately 75-85% graft survival rate||For most patients, 90% or greater graft survival rate|
|Scarring||Minimal, barely detectable scarring||Linear scar at donor site|
The Benefits and Risks of FUE’ to ‘The Benefits of FUE
There are many benefits of the FUE technique, including:
- Permanent, natural-looking hair restoration
- No linear scars at the donor site
- More plentiful donor supply (individual follicle harvesting increases extraction sites)
- Quick healing process allowing patients to return to normal activities the next day
Complications are extremely rare, but there is the possibility of infection.
How is FUE performed?
An FUE is a state-of-the-art procedure in which a fine surgical tool is used to extract follicular units one at a time. The device makes small circular incisions around the follicular unit and pulls it from the scalp. Small punctures are made in bald area and the follicular units are individually placed in the small tissue openings. Dr. Yael Halaas is a highly skilled surgeon who works with the utmost precision and the finest instruments to ensure the optimal viability of the follicular units and the smallest incisions and scars.
What is the recovery process?
After a FUE hair transplant, most patients can return to normal activities within two days. However, rigorous exercise should be avoided for about a week. Patients can expect some redness and mild discomfort of the donor and recipient sites. These symptoms are temporary and the small transplant wounds typically heal within 1-2 weeks.
