Propecia® (finasteride)

Propecia® (finasteride) is a drug clinically indicated for enlarged prostate gland. It prevents testosterone from being converted into DHT, so it might prevent or improve male-pattern baldness, and it can now be prescribed by doctors in the USA for this purpose. Because Finasteride is am oral medication rather than a solution it is more convenient than Minoxidil. It is most effective if the areas of concern have many fine, thin hairs. Also, younger patients seem to respond slightly better than older subjects. In any case, if your hair loss is extensive, it will likely not give you the desired result. It should be taken indefinitely if hair growth is to continue.

Recognized side-effects, experienced by around 2% of users, include erectile dysfunction. In trial studies, side effects ceased after dosage was discontinued.

Questions? Call and schedule a consultation with Dr. Halaas. We can provide an expert opinion of the most recent developments in hair loss today, what causes it and what is effective today (including FDA approved remedies, surgery and non-surgical options).

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a vasodilator and originally was exclusively used as an oral drug (Loniten®) to treat high blood pressure. It was, however, discovered to have the interesting side effect of hair growth and reversing baldness, and in the 1980s, Upjohn Corporation produced a topical solution that contained 2% minoxidil to be used to treat baldness and hair loss, under the brand name Rogaine in the United States. Treatments usually include a 5% concentration solution designed for men, while the 2% concentration solution is designed for women.

As a drug to combat hair loss, the most common side effect is an itchy scalp.

If a person uses minoxidil to stop hair loss It will work until the product is discontinued.

Treatments That Probably Don't Work

Thousands of products for baldness are advertised on TV and on the Internet. They claim to make hair re-grow, or simply to stop further loss. Most charge high prices and simply use minoxidil which can be purchased over-the-counter in your local pharmacy for approximately $10.

Other products, most likely, are a complete waste of money. Most have not been assessed by proper research studies, and aim to persuade a consumer by a single 'true life' success story. Because hair loss is often noticeable for a month or two and then stops for a few months it is easy to imagine that a product is having an effect. Without proper, recognized research studies, treating hundreds of people with the product and an equal number with a control group version of the treatment, it is impossible to know one way or the other about effectiveness and safety. So before trying a treatment, ask the company for a copy of published evidence and the credentials of the firm testing the product.

Suggestions

Wash your hair daily with a mild shampoo. Dirty hair lies flatter and looks more sparse. Avoid anything that could make the hairs likely to break. After washing don't rub your hair vigorously or use a hot hairdryer. Rather, pat the hair dry with a soft towel or use a low setting on the dryer or, even better, let it dry naturally. Use a brush with soft bristles. Use a creame rinse detangler to undo any tangles, rather than pulling with a comb. Protect bald areas from sun damage.

Propecia® is a registered trademark of Merck Pharmeceuticals, Inc.
Rogaine® is a registered trademark of Pfizer, Inc

Dr. Yael Halaas is acknowledged as one of New York City's top hair transplant surgeons and facial plastic surgeons by her patients and peers. She has performed numerous eyebrow hair transplants and achieves consistently great results. She prides herself on her training, esthetic eye, and results.

What causes eyebrow hair loss? Most commonly, it’s caused from over-plucking, prior electrolysis and/or laser hair removal, or an accident leaving a scar. This condition can also be caused by genetics or medical abnormalities such as an abnormal thyroid.

Eyebrow hair transplant procedures are performed by Dr. Halaas under mild oral sedation in her new State of the Art, Park Avenue New York office.

Donor hairs for your eyebrow hair transplant procedure are harvested from an area of the scalp where finer hairs are located. Selecting finer donor hair gives you a result more consistent with your original eyebrow hairs. The donor site incision is located in the back of the head and is typically 1-2 inches in length. Once harvested, you will be left with a pencil thin scar which will be concealed by your existing hair.

These newly harvested hairs are placed one at a time in a naturally-growing angle into tiny .5mm or .6mm incisions and serve to provide thicker, permanent, naturally-appearing eyebrows. The entire Eyebrow transplant procedure from start to finish takes about 3-4 hours.

In approximately two weeks the transplanted hair follicles will fall out, which is a normal part of the process, and the new follicles will start to grow in about 3 months. It can take up to a year before you see the final results.

It should be noted that some of the donor hairs may need to be trimmed approximately once a month and groomed to personal taste. The donated hairs will last a lifetime.

Contact Dr. Halaas today for your complimentary eyebrow hair transplant consultation to restore the natural appearance of your eyebrows.

Hair transplantation is essentially a two-part procedure.

Hair is first harvested from the back part of the head, where hair is generally resistant to male pattern baldness. The second part entails hair such hair being transplanted into the balding areas.

The two most typical methods of hair transplantation are Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE) and Follicular Unit Grafting(FUG). These two techniques differ in the harvesting portion of the transplant while the placing remains the same. What’s different about FUE is that it uses a relatively new method of extracting donor hairs.

While the most popular method of hair extraction, Follicular Unit Grafting (FUG) excises thin strips of hair from the donor region and then dissects these strips into individual grafts, FUE extracts these individual grafts individually.

Using a very small “punch like” instrument, the Dr. Halaas makes a tiny incision around each follicular unit consisting of one, two, three, or four hairs. While FUG leaves long, thin scars that are difficult to detect, even on close inspection, FUE leaves only miniscule marks that are usually undetectable. With FUE, there is minimal down time, no sutures and no bandages.

The FUE procedure has some very specific advantages and disadvantages when compared to the other leading method, Follicular Unit Grafting (FUG). It produces no visible scars—a very important consideration for men who wear their hair very close cut. However, if multiple FUE procedures are performed on one individual area there can be an overall thinning appearance in the donor area. Also, because the FUE procedure is minimally invasive with no large incisions or sutures, recovery is faster than with FUG.

There are, however, some downsides to FUE as well. Mainly, because of the precise nature of the individual method of hair transplantation, fewer hairs can be transplanted in a single session. If your hair restoration requires a very high number of grafts, you might require multiple sessions of FUE than you might if you chose the FUG method. Another thing to consider when deciding between the two is the time-consuming, labor-intensive process of FUE can be significantly more expensive than FUG.

As a final and important consideration, you should be aware that not all patients are candidates for FUE. It can be very difficult to remove unharmed follicular units from certain patient’s scalps and as a results, a greater portion of these grafts may not be intact as opposed to being removed using FUG. At the beginning of each FUE procedure a small sample of extractions, a “test procedure”, is attempted to determine if the patient is a good candidate for this type of procedure.

To determine which method might be best for you, schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Halaas. She will evaluate your hair loss, discuss your goals, and help you weigh the risks and benefits of your many options.

See FUE Hair Transplant Photos

Follicular Unit Hair Grafts

Hair transplantation is essentially a two-part procedure.

Hair is first harvested from the back part of the head, where hair is generally resistant to male pattern baldness. The second part entails hair such hair being transplanted into the balding areas.

The two most typical methods of hair transplantation are Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE) and Follicular Unit Grafting(FUG). These two techniques differ in the harvesting portion of the transplant while the placing remains the same.

FUG, the most popular method, excises thin strips of hair from the donor region and then dissects these strips into grafts of individual follicular units containing one, two, three or four hairs. (By contrast, FUE extracts these individual grafts directly from the scalp, one at a time.) These hairs are then transplanted into tiny receptor sites in the balding areas.

FUG leaves thin linear scars in the donor area. Hair will grow through these scars and they are very well concealed. When you’re fully healed from your FUG procedure, the scars will be very difficult to detect, even on close inspection.

The FUG procedure has some important advantages and disadvantages when compared to FUE. More hairs can be transplanted in a single session of FUG than in a session of FUE. If your hair restoration goal requires a very high number of grafts, you might require more sessions of FUE than you might if we used FUG. You might even just need the one session of FUG! Also, when compared to FUE, FUG is significantly less expensive.

As a disadvantage, FUG require incisions, men who wear their hair very short (a crewcut, for example) might want to consider FUE instead. Recovery from FUG is slightly longer than from FUE because sutures are required to close the incisions in the donor area .

Dr. Halaas can help you to determine which method might be best for you during a complimentary consultation. She will evaluate your hair loss, discuss your goals, and help you weigh the risks and benefits of your many options.
