There is a reason that lush brows are the latest beauty trend. Not only are they bold and dynamic, they add a freshness to the face. Overly thin eyebrows tend to add years to the appearance, making the face seem artificially harsh. More naturally-shaped, fuller brows soften the expression and accentuate the eyes. Unfortunately, not all of us boast thick brows. However, with the help of today’s hair transplant techniques, we can enhance our brows and give them extra dimension. Unlike makeup and brow pencils, an eyebrow transplant are more than a temporary fix–it is permanent solution to your thinning brows. Dr. Yael Halaas specializes in eyebrow hair transplants and performs them in her New York City office.
Common Causes of Eyebrow Hair Loss
Thinning eyebrows happens frequently, particularly as we age. Not only do we become more susceptible to hair loss in general, but we may begin to see the unintended effects of a lifetime of grooming and beauty habits. Consistent over plucking and excessive tweezing of the eyebrows can permanently damage the delicate hair follicles, inhibiting growth. Eyebrow hair loss is most commonly caused by:
- Over plucking, waxing or tweezing
- Prior electrolysis and/or laser hair removal
- An accident that leaves a scar
- The natural aging process
- Medical abnormalities, such as an abnormal thyroid
How Eyebrow Transplants are Performed
Eyebrow hair transplant procedures are performed with the use of a mild oral sedation, to ensure the procedure is painless. First, Dr. Halaas will harvest donor hairs from an area of the scalp where finer hair may be located. By grafting finer hair, you are more likely to see a result that is consistent with your original eyebrow hair.
Dr. Halaas will place the donor hair one-by-one into tiny incisions, carefully implanting the hairs so they are embedded at a naturally-growing angle (.5mm or .6mm long). The procedure, from start to finish, takes about 3 to 4 hours.
Eyebrow Hair Transplant Healing Process
In approximately two weeks, the transplanted hair follicles will fall out, which is a normal part of the process. The new follicles will start to grow in within about 3 months. Although it can take up to a year to see the final results, the wait will be worth it: you can look forward to natural-looking brows that are permanently thicker.
It should be noted that some of the donor hairs may need to be trimmed approximately once a month and groomed to personal taste. An eyebrow transplant can be transformative. Moreover, with the proper care, the donated hairs will last a lifetime.
